Jian Ware Lacquer Bag

Made for a tea drinker who wanted to carry one cherished Jian ware bowl in a bag that would also sit naturally with her qipao.

One bowl defines the object

The triangular body takes its volume from the bowl it protects. A braided leather handle gathers the form at the top, while green, gold and brown move across the lacquered surface in response to the glaze of the client’s bowl.

Strength and suppleness

The bag is fully covered in lacquer yet can still open and flex. It adapts the flexible lacquer formulation developed for the Vine-and-Lacquer Leather Pillow. Leather provides the moving body; the lacquer film provides the finished surface. The Chinese title, 刚柔相济, names this coexistence of strength and suppleness.

Exhibition

He Wei designed and made the work in 2018. It was selected for the 2018 Fuzhou International Lacquer Art Biennale, presenting leather as a flexible body for contemporary lacquer work.
