Why a cracker?
A rectangle, scalloped edges and a field of dimples need little explanation. The work starts from that shared visual memory and brings the inherited logic of lacquered leather into a smaller, lighter object for today’s table.
The Chinese name uses the character 承: the object supports incense, but it also receives the marks of use and time. Two openings among the dimples accept incense sticks of different thicknesses; they belong to the structure rather than being decorative marks.

Three surface routes
Natural keeps the warm colour, fibre and tonal variation of the leather visible through repeated wiped lacquer and curing. Ink Black uses black lacquer and carbon powder to make a quieter, textured surface. Ink Black with Gold Leaf adds gold leaf by hand, allowing cracks, dark ground and irregular edges to remain visible.

Making and care
The current making record groups the work into eleven stages. The first five form and seal the leather body; the three finishes then follow different routes. It is a record of how this object was made, not a general tutorial.
After ash has cooled, brush it away gently and wipe the surface with a soft, well-wrung damp cloth. Do not use abrasives, alcohol or strong cleaners. Place burning incense on a stable, heat-resistant surface and never leave it unattended.
